Fine Wine Market Performance
The fine wine market is not stable and highly profitable if investors are not guided into it with professionalism and transparency.
Fine wine investors and collectors have been cellaring rare bottles and cases for several decades now.
One of the best examples of this phenomenon has been Lord Webber who has recently sold his fine wine collection for £3.5 million.
Therefore, fine wine investment is not new to people in the know.
Historically, fine wine investment has outperformed other traditional investment products such as equities and bonds over the last three decades.
See figure 1 comparing performance of fine wine investment (using the BI Investment-Grade 100 Index) and main traditional asset classes during 2010.

All in all, our general view is that fine wine investment has still a long way to go even though, going forward, there may be periods characterised by uncertainty in global markets.
Investors who are interested in statistical data, market performance and analysis, would rely on our in-house indices whih are independently produced (See the BI Investment-Grade 100 index on figure 2) which are unmissable tools to make informed decisions.

Fine Wine Market Performance & Emerging Economies
The desirability and limited supply of investment grade wines has led to an increased global demand for such assets, particularly from HNWI in emerging economies such as China, Singapore, India, and Russia.
Since February 2008, Hong Kong has lifted a 40% import tax on wine and beer. Hong Kong has since become a popular centre for the fine wine trade and the local authorities aim to make the city the global wine hub surpassing London and New York.
For investors located in mainland China where wine imports still attract high taxes, Hong Kong has become a centre to establish business operations.
